Mountains to Miracles Veterans’ Foundation, Inc. was established in 2012 to assist disabled veterans in any way possible. Paul D. DuBois of Tribes Hill, NY, a veteran involved since 2010 in helping other veterans, is the founder and CEO of this 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. It functions as an information clearing house for veteran-related issues, and offers consultation on how to obtain services.

Since the organization’s inception, Mountains to Miracles (MTM) volunteers have provided a host of different services to local veterans.  They have assisted a great many veterans in navigating the VA system to apply for various types of benefits.  They help with Vet Courts and Peer-To-Peer support groups.  Mountains to Miracles hosts an annual Military Family Fun Day, featuring many agencies that serve veterans, as well as fun activities for veterans and their families.  The organization has provided  furniture, food, clothing, and in some cases referrals for legal assistance and/or treatment of mental health issues.  Each year, the volunteers arrange for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for veterans in need, and for Christmas gifts for their children.

MTM facilitated an arrangement with Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed Corporation whereby the company provides veterans who suffer from back injuries with a Sleep Number bed at cost. For example, a bed that normally retails at $10,000 will cost the veteran $1,000.00 to $1,900.00.  In many cases, MTM has been able to obtain matching funds from other organizations so that there is no out- of- pocket cost for the veteran.

Some time ago, Paul and his volunteers envisioned, and ultimately brought to fruition, an important offshoot of Mountains to Miracles:  the “Woofs for Warriors” Project.  This program matches veterans suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), TBI (traumatic brain injury) and MST (military sexual trauma) with service/companion /emotional assistance dogs.   Studies have shown that 1 out of every 10 returning veterans will suffer from one or more of these disorders.  It has been proven that companion dogs provide comfort for the veterans and have helped to prevent suicides, reduce stress, and generally enable the veteran to cope with life after deployment.  “Woofs for Warriors” adopts suitable dogs from shelters or rescue groups, provides training for the dog and veteran together, and helps with the cost of veterinary services and dog food.  Each veteran-dog team is assigned a mentor to assist them if needed.

Mountains to Miracles receives referrals from the Albany Stratton VA Hospital, as well as from the military, family, friends and neighbors. In many cases, the organization has become the veterans’ last resort.  To date Mountains to Miracles has handled approximately 350 different cases.

Since starting Mountains to Miracles, Paul and his volunteers have made it a point to reach out to other area organizations that also serve veterans.  MTM now networks with around 30 different such groups, in order to provide the very best solution to every veteran’s problem.   Representatives of these agencies meet once a month to share information and ideas.

Over the last few months, the success of Mountains to Miracles has led to requests from other parts of the state for Paul to start branches in those areas. However, the organization is committed to maintaining its local focus within the Greater Capital District area, particularly Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie Counties.

Mountains to Miracles Veterans’ Foundation, Inc. operates exclusively with volunteers.  There are no paid staff members.  All of the funds raised are used for veterans. Since the organization receives no Federal or State funds, it relies solely on donations to continue its work.  Of necessity, Paul and his staff frequently operate various types of fund-raisers.  Paul has also done guest appearances on both radio and TV, as well as newspaper interviews, to “get the word out” to all who are interested in helping veterans. One of Paul’s hopes for the future is the formation of a Military Families Chorus, which would perform at concerts as part of the fund-raising effort.

Mountains to Miracles Veterans’ Foundation is a 501(c)3 Not-for-Profit organization.
